Okazaki created his Danzan Ryu rankings with the dual intent of maintaining the traditions of his instructors and keeping up with the modern training philosophies coming from Japan. He maintained the "kyu-dan" system of colored belts we see commonly today as well as the Menkyo (teaching license) system of ancient Japan.
Traditionally a Sensei can promote a student up to his own current rank.
Danzan Ryu instructors will often promote students to brown belt and after a period of time the student will be invited to test before the board of professors. This ensures a uniform level of competence for all black belts in the system.

Professor Okazaki structured his system along various "boards" each representing a part of the Danzan Ryu system.
Ukemi & Sutemi, Tumbling and falling.
Yawara, hand arts & joint locks.
Nage, throwing & takedowns.
Shime, constrictions & grappling.
Oku, combination arts.
Goshin Jitsu, self defense arts,
Shinin, black belt arts.
Kappo, healing and restorative arts.
These are just a few of the lists that make Danzan Ryu Jujitsu a highly comprehensive system of self defense and self development.
